Any employee who was reliable and had common sense was put on a management track, regardless of their post-high school education. Literally all you had to do was show up and do your job with minimum supervision, and within six months, you’d get a significant promotion with a raise. There were three levels of manager at the store level. Within five years, you could be a head store manager, making (at the time) $80k+ annually. That’s not too shabby for someone with just a high school diploma.
