I know many teachers, and many professors. I’m increasingly skeptical that a meaningful amount of teaching is taught in teacher education, mostly because that’s what my teacher friends tell me. Learning theory, sure, but that’s flavor-of-the-month, and debated at the best of times. How to write lesson plans? Sure, but here it is: write down what you want to teach, how you’ll teach it, how you’ll reinforce it, and how you’ll assess it. Lather, rinse, repeat. Classroom management? Sure, but I don’t have to do that; my students (notionally) choose to be there. If I have to, I’ll tell you to quiet down. Then I’ll tell you to shut up if you continue. Then I’ll throw you out. (never had to actually do that. Yet.)
