Although I would’ve been eligible for health insurance (huzzah!), the university was unwilling to negotiate the salary or even provide funds to help with moving expenses. To make matters worse, the university is located in a city with a very high cost of living for the Midwestern US. I would’ve loved to teach there, but unfortunately they didn’t come anywhere close to offering a living wage. The pay for adjunct faculty in the humanities is notoriously bad these days, and an abysmal offer I had from a small university in West Virginia a few years ago was a glaring example of it.
