We can’t speak of long oil change intervals without a shout out to the ‘roller crank’ design. Back when weight didn’t matter so much, a number of auto and motorcycle engines (many Japanese motorcycles come to mind) used roller bearings to connect the rods to the crank shaft. This system uses a low pressure, high volume oil pump and doesn’t rely on the oil’s film strength to protect the main bearings, just it’s normal lubrication properties. The oil’s big job was heat control and lubrication of other less demanding engine components. If you kept any oil at all it these motors you could go ridiculous numbers of miles without oil changes.
