I try to be fair and equitable in decisions that I make and find time to hear and take seriously their concerns. All of these things give me credibility in the eyes of the students and probably do 90% of the job of classroom control. When students enter my class for the first time in grade 11, they already know most of this stuff either from interacting with me or know from other students. In the classroom I try to create an atmosphere of trust among students, and I sprinkle it with good natured ribbing and general humor when it’s appropriate. I negotiate due dates with students based on their other classes and extra-curricular activities. I am empathetic when they make mistakes.
