My daughter started first grade in public school reading at a fifth grade level. She had pretty much taught herself to read, listening to the word games we played with her older brothers, following along in the books I read to her, and absorbing what she was taught in her privately-run preschool and kindergarten. By six weeks into the school year, the school had tested her, placed her in a gifted program, and asked us if we would consent to letting them move her up a grade for reading and language arts. Well, of course. By third grade, she was doing everything except math and “related arts” (music and art) with the grade above her, and most of her friends were in that grade.
